We introduce the body parts associated with the 5 senses. And then talk about each sense through it's opposites such as hot and cold associated with the sense of touch. We relate the basic concepts, e.g. hot and cold to experience of the everyday world such as fire and ice for a preschooler to begin learning more advanced topics.
We started learning about opposites using Baby Einstein SmartPad and Opposites All Around Book (http://uedata.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-First-Smart-Library/dp/1450876099). The SmartPad is an easy to use two-sided electronic activity pad that says a word aloud after it is spelled correctly. For us this is mainly a phonics tool that teaches my daughter to spell.

The book provides a definition of "opposite" that an adult or older child can read and explain.

Sense of Touch: Wet and Dry / Water and Land
One of my favorite pages is about the fish and the cat because it introduces the concepts of wet and dry. Wet and dry refer to our sense of touch. My daughter and I talked more generally about water and land and even pointed out water and land on a map of the world. We have yet to discuss other animals that live mainly in water or on land.

sense of Touch: Hot and Cold / Equator and North and South Poles
When we got to the page about hot and cold, we went to the kitchen to talk about the oven and the refrigerator. Hot and cold also refer to our sense of touch. We talked about how the oven is dangerous to touch. And also if we leave food outside the refrigerator, it does not taste good any more.
Next we discovered a page from The Preschool Big Book of Learning Fun (http://www.amazon.com/Preschool-Big-Book-Learning-Fun/dp/1938751140/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1439744947&sr=8-1&keywords=preschool+big+book+of+learning+fun+learnalot) that incorporates the concept of opposites such as hot and cold through asking which item does not belong in a row of pictures.

Based on the worksheet, we discussed how fire or anything hot is dangerous. We also talked about cold things such as ice cream, ice, and snow can melt from solid to liquid. I was happy my daughter got all of the correct answers so that I know she understands what hot or cold looks like. And now she has heard about words such as solid and liquid and steam. We will work on understanding these in the future.
Senses of Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Mouth are sight, hearing, smell, and taste as shown in the 5 SENSES diagram. Examples of opposites are light and dark (day and night), soft sound and loud sound, good smell and bad smell, sweet taste and sour taste.
